Smitty's Trail Report
December 21, 2004
Well, it is that time of year again, and it should be a good one. Lake Gogebic Area has two new groomers, and one that's two years old, so we are looking forward to having the best trails in the Midwest.
Heavy snows early will let us build a good base and start our season a little earlier. If you have never tried the trails in the Western UP this is the year to do it, you will be glad you did.
This is the heart of big snow country, and we have a very heavy snowmobile trade and a trail system to handle it. Seven trails can be reached within three miles of the Walleye Lodge, so there is no need for a bad ride (yes, it's true: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION).
Trail conditions change by the hour, not the day. We stay in touch with the groomers and try and give our guests the up-to-date trail info at the front desk.
The first big weekend is in the books, and overall it was a big success. Most had a good ride and the two groomers were kept busy with heavy trail traffic and new snow. The third groomer should hit the trails today, so things should be getting even better.
We have a lot of snow and, with all three groomers out, we should have good to very good trails this week. The wet spots are still causing minor problems, but the extremely cold weather has helped a lot. Check with your host for problems in their area.
You can view area trail maps by visiting: http://www.fishweb.com/recreation/snowmobile/trails/wup.html. Walleye Lodge is located at the northern end of Lake Gobegic, with easy access to some of the finest trails!
Have a safe and joyous holiday and come play in the tons of snow. (We still have a few openings the first week in January.) Smitty, D., and the Walleye Lodge Crew.
